Yesterday was a good day in our history. :)
I have relatives that are homosexual. I hope that's the proper term, I surely wouldn't want to offend anyone....ever.
Anyway....
My Mom's only sister married a man (a long, long time ago) that had been married before. He had three children from a prior marriage. The youngest of the three was named Mike.
Mike was the kindest person I can ever remember knowing in my life. He was so outgoing and friendly. He'd tease us, he would talk to all of us, which was odd for my family. He moved out of town when he was grown and he only came back to visit. He always came to see his Aunt Dee, they were close. They wrote letters and kept in touch. My mom named her youngest son after him.
I remember my Dad not liking him. I never knew why. Small town, secluded from the outside world, especially in the 70's.
Mike died quite young, complications from aids. His partner was at the funeral. It was far away, my sister lived nearby and she went to the funeral with my cousins. I don't remember what my sister said about how the family treated his partner, just that clearly he was heartbroken and sad. He had taken care of Mike.
I wish they could have gotten married years ago. I never met his partner but if Mike loved him, he must have be something special.
This is why I am glad that the Supreme Court voted the way they did. I wondered if the ones that voted for it had family members that it would effect. If they don't, I admire them for being open minded.
I'm not the greatest writer but I wanted to put some thoughts about Mike down somewhere. :) Kindness is one of the nicest thing a person can share.
